Kunekune Pigs and Pork

Originally, we chose Kunekune ( pronounced Cooney-Cooney) pigs due to their smaller size, docile nature and the fact that they are easier on pastures than larger breeds of pigs. Kunekunes were a great introduction to pigs on the farm. They are a great pig for people just getting into pigs. They are fairly easy to keep and love the company of people and other animals. We raise Registered Kunekune pigs for breeding stock for other farmers. Pigs that do not meet the breed standard for the Kunekune registries (IKHR and akkps) are neutered and culled, they are then sold as pets or sent to grow out for meat.

Kunekune pork is a fabulous meat. All of our pork is slow grown which results in a healthy fat that doesn’t shrink when cooked or leave much fat in the pan.

All pork sold by our farm is USDA, humanely processed at an approved facility.

Kunekune Pig Registries and Resources

Gloucestershire Old Spots

After raising Kunekune pigs for 4 years, we decided to add Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs to our farm. Gloucestershire (GOS) pigs are also a Heritage Breed pig, like the Kunekunes. GOS are a larger, faster growing pig that also grow out on pasture grasses. We found that with the kunekunes we couldn’t keep pork in the freezers for customers and our families due to the longer grow-out and smaller size. The GOS are a bit harder on our pastures but we strategically place them in paddocks that we are planning to plant next season. They till the soil for us and then we can plant the seeds for pasture growth. Win, win.

We are excited about this Old Heritage Breed and what they will bring to our farm! We look forward to offering more Heritage Pork to our customers in the near future.
