We accidentally became sheep farmers. A lone ewe showed up in our neighbors pasture during a storm in our first Spring at the farm. We eventually ended up with the Ewe. Since our neighbors are cattle farmers, she was the only sheep is a pasture full of cows. Our boys would play “Where’s Waldo” every time we would drive past. Waldo became Wally and Wally is still with us, as are her daughters and granddaughters.

Our first sheep was a Katahdin sheep and we’ve added several Katahdin sheep to the herd. In 2019, we also had a small herd of Katahdin/Dorper crossbred ewes to our herd. Other than coloring, we don’t see much difference in the 2 breeds. Both breeds are hair sheep, so we do not sheer them, they shed.

We love raising sheep! Our sheep need minimal care. Our sheep have recently been receiving the Shegogg Goat Mineral for parasite prevention. We perform our own fecal exams and we have seen an incredible change in parasites since switching to the Shegogg Mineral! Lower parasite count means you lower the costs associated with treatment and less stress on your herd. The Shegogg Mineral does contain trace amounts of Copper and is labeled for goats, but it also contains the antidote for copper toxicity in sheep. Many experienced Katahdin sheep farmers have verified some copper is not a threat to the sheep and we agree. Being able to avoid giving a synthetic dewormer makes the Shegogg mineral very attractive to us!
